Language Development : 2 1/2 to 3 Years Old

The following are stages of language development for toddlers - ranging in age from 2 to 2 1/2 years of age.

Receptive

  • Comprehend 800 words
  • Comprehend  more complex commands (e.g. run fast, under, on, over, here, jump)
  • Comprehends turn taking
  • Shows interest in 'why' and 'how'
  • Comprehends most common adjectives

Expressive

  • Begins to use verb contraction
  • Dysfluencies are common
  • Rapid vocabulary expansion (900 words)
  • Uses simple sentences
  • Increase in Grammatical Skills (simple past tense, present progressive verb form, plurals, possessives, adjectives, prepositional phrases)
  • Asks questions
  • Tells about immediate experiences
  • Can ID objects by name and use
  • Knows a few rhymes
  • Can repeat 3 digits
  • 90% of speech understandable
